What Is BHA in Skincare?

BHAs, or beta hydroxy acids, are exfoliating acids commonly used in skincare to help refine the look of pores, smooth uneven texture, and support clearer-looking skin. The most common BHA is salicylic acid, a well-loved ingredient for oily, congested, and breakout-prone skin.

Unlike AHAs and PHAs, which work mainly on the skin’s surface, BHAs are oil-soluble. This makes them especially useful for areas prone to excess oil, clogged pores, blackheads, and blemishes.

BHAs, like salicylic acid, are oil-soluble exfoliating acids often chosen for pores, congestion, blackheads, and breakout-prone skin. AHAs, like glycolic and lactic acid, are water-soluble acids often used for glow, texture, dullness, and visible signs of aging. PHAs, like gluconolactone and lactobionic acid, offer a gentler exfoliating option often chosen for sensitive, dry, or reactive skin.

Who are BHAs best for?

BHA skincare is often best suited for oily, combination, congested, or breakout-prone skin. It can also be helpful for anyone who wants to improve the look of enlarged pores, blackheads, uneven texture, or recurring buildup.

As with any exfoliant, start slowly and avoid over-exfoliating. Use SPF during the day, and avoid applying BHA products to irritated, freshly treated, or compromised skin.
