Curly Styling Guide for Defined, Soft Curls
Find your ritual / The curl edit
Soft curls. A little bounce. Less bathroom guesswork. Start with enough conditioning, even product coverage and time to dry—then adjust one thing at a time.

What does your hair need today?
Rough ends? Look at conditioning. Soft curls that lose shape? Consider hold. Flat or coated? Try less product first.
Your wash-day rhythm
01 / PREP
Give curls some slip
Cleanse and condition, then gently detangle. Squeeze out drips without rubbing. Follow your styler’s directions: damp hair suits some formulas; others call for wet curls.
02 / SHAPE
Spread, then scrunch
Start small through lengths and ends. Work in sections for dense hair, then scrunch upward. Add gel or mousse if you need more hold; a richer cream is not always the answer.
03 / SET
Let the shape settle
Air-dry or diffuse with low airflow and comfortable low heat. Keep handling light. If your gel forms a firm cast, wait until fully dry before gently scrunching it soft.
Using heat? Choose a product that explicitly offers heat protection and follow its directions. A curl cream is not automatically a heat protectant.
The Oak + Tonic edit
Three textures. One starting point.
Choose the conditioning weight your hair enjoys. These are alternatives—not three layers to pile on. Pattern is a useful clue; strand thickness, density and how easily your hair goes flat matter too.

The next-day refresh
Reset a few pieces, not your whole morning
Try damp hands on flattened or fuzzy sections, then scrunch. Add a trace of your usual styler only where needed. Let it dry before touching again.
A smooth pillowcase or a loose satin scrunchie may help reduce overnight friction. Keep any tie comfortable and loose.
Change one thing next wash day
My curls look flat or feel coated
Reduce the leave-in amount and keep richer textures away from the roots. If repeated refreshes have left buildup, cleanse before adding more layers.
My hair feels soft, but the shape disappears
Try a little more hold rather than more cream. Distribute your gel or mousse evenly and let the style dry before separating curls.
I have frizz before my hair is dry
Check product coverage and the water level your formula recommends. Try gentler towel handling, less touching and lower diffuser airflow. Some frizz and variation are normal.
The ends feel rough in Calgary’s dry weather
Revisit your rinse-out conditioner and try a little extra leave-in through the ends. Adjust to how your hair feels rather than adding a full extra layer everywhere.
A few good questions
Do I need cream and gel?
Only if each adds something useful. Cream can help softness; gel can add hold. Try one first, then add a light second layer if needed.
Is a crunchy gel cast a bad sign?
Not necessarily. Some gels dry into a firm cast. Once hair is completely dry, gently scrunch with clean hands. If it still feels too stiff, try less next time.
Should every curl routine start on soaking-wet hair?
No. Follow your product directions and notice your results. The Wavy and Curly leave-ins above call for damp hair; the Coily formula calls for wet curls.
