Winter Hand Care for Calgary's Dry, Cold Days

Find your ritual / The winter hand edit

Cold walk. Warm café. Another handwash. Calgary winters keep our hands busy—and often a little rough around the edges. Give them a softer landing with three small habits and a texture you’ll love reaching for.

What do your hands need today?

Find your texture, or jump straight to the routine. One moisturiser you use consistently is a good place to start.

Why winter feels different

Dry air and frequent washing can leave skin losing moisture faster than you’d like. Think of your routine in two parts: replenish moisture, then protect your hands. Cream and gloves make a useful team.

Three moments. A little more comfort.

Wash. Wrap up. Wind down.

01 / AT THE SINK

Make moisture the next step

Use lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Pat dry, then apply cream while skin is slightly damp. Include knuckles and the skin around your nails.

02 / OUT THE DOOR

Give hands a cosy layer

Wear dry, comfortable gloves outdoors. Use protective gloves for dishes and cleaning, too—less repeated contact with water and detergents helps.

03 / BEFORE BED

Take one minute for you

Massage in your moisturiser. Choose a richer cream if you need it; soft cotton gloves can help keep it in place overnight.

Stinging, itchy or easily irritated? All three picks above are scented. Choose a fragrance-free cream or ointment for sensitive hands, and pause products that sting. Our fragrance-free guide helps you read beyond the scent description.

A little hand-care know-how

Can I use the body lotion I already own?

Yes. If it feels comfortable and gives you enough moisture, use it. A richer cream or ointment may suit very dry hands better.

Hand sanitizer or cream—which comes first?

Sanitizer first. Rub it over all surfaces of your hands until completely dry, then apply cream.

Should I scrub away rough patches?

Skip scrubs and acids on cracked, stinging or irritated skin. Focus on gentle washing, moisturising and protection. Soften dry cuticles with cream rather than picking or cutting them.

When does dryness need extra help?

If hands are bleeding, swollen, deeply cracked, painful or not improving, speak with a pharmacist or healthcare professional.
